The New Providence Wharf residential complex in Poplar, East London, experienced a fire, marking the third such incident there since 2021. The blaze originated on the 13th-floor balcony of a 19-storey tower, reportedly caused by a discarded cigarette.

As a precaution, approximately 150 residents were evacuated. Eight fire engines and approximately sixty firefighters from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived on the scene quickly. The fire was brought under control within 25 minutes, with damage confined to the balcony and an adjacent door.

Smoke inhalation was treated for three people, and two of them were taken to the hospital for further treatment. This incident follows previous fires at New Providence Wharf, including a significant blaze in May 2021 that exposed serious fire safety deficiencies, such as the failure of the smoke ventilation system and the use of combustible materials on balconies.

Residents and officials responsible for fire safety have expressed concern about the recurrence of fires despite improvements made since then. While acknowledging the progress, LFB Assistant Commissioner Pam Oparaocha emphasized the necessity of maintaining vigilance and adhering to fire safety procedures.

The ongoing difficulties in maintaining fire safety in high-rise residential buildings are brought to light by the numerous incidents that have occurred at New Providence Wharf.

These incidents emphasize the significance of regular upkeep, resident awareness, and efficient strategies for responding to emergencies.
