An Egyptian girl named Marina Ashraf woke up from an 11-day coma\u00a0last week after she survived\u00a0a fire that broke out at a Coptic Orthodox church in Giza province, west of the capital Cairo, local Cairo 24 news outlet\u00a0reported\u00a0on Monday, citing a family member.<\/p>\n
Asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation cut off necessary\u00a0oxygen t\u00a0her bloodstream that resulted in a coma, a health ministry source told Cairo 24.<\/p>\n
It remains unclear what her medical status is currently.<\/p>\n
Marina’s family received counselling during their child’s coma and learned how to deal with her throughout her recovery, added the source.<\/p>\n
The Abi Sefein church blaze in the Imbaba working-class neighbourhood during Sunday mass\u00a0was caused by “a short circuit in a power generator”, leaving 41 dead, including the priest and 16 others injured, according to the official\u00a0narrative.<\/p>\n
However,\u00a0a high-level security source had told\u00a0The New Arab<\/em>\u00a0that the frequent church fires recently witnessed at Egyptian churches were\u00a0suspected\u00a0to be pre-meditated.<\/p>\n The Egyptian authorities have\u00a0denied\u00a0criminal intent\u00a0so far\u00a0despite eight similar fires\u00a0flaring up over eight days around\u00a0the Egyptian capital, in Giza province, in southern Egypt and the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.<\/p>\n Before the fires, Christians suffered other forms of assault. Last month, two knife-yielding men\u00a0assaulted\u00a0an Orthodox Coptic owner of a warehouse of alcoholic beverages and his son\u00a0in Giza, leaving both in critical condition.<\/p>\n Earlier in April, a man killed a Coptic priest at a\u00a0seaside promenade in Alexandria.
