Two Haitian journalists have been killed while reporting in the country\u2019s capital on the weekend, a journalists\u2019 association and news outlets said, as\u00a0deadly gang violence\u00a0continues to ripple across Port-au-Prince.<\/p>\n
The two reporters were fatally shot and their bodies burned on Sunday while they were reporting on violence in the impoverished neighbourhood of Cite Soleil, which has suffered from\u00a0heightened gang activity\u00a0in recent months. Their bodies have not been recovered.<\/p>\n
The victims were identified as journalists Tayson Latigue, who worked for digital publication Ti Jenn Jounalis, and Frantzsen Charles, a reporter with FS News Haiti.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe announce with great sorrow the death of our journalist and reporter Frantzsen Charles and another colleague. They were killed by\u00a0bandits\u00a0while reporting in Cite Soleil. We demand justice for our colleague,\u201d FS News Haiti said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Their deaths come amid rising violence in Haiti, where rival gangs have been\u00a0battling for control\u00a0of territory in and around the capital as instability worsened after President Jovenel Moise\u2019s\u00a0assassination\u00a0in July of last year.<\/p>\n
The reporters had been investigating\u00a0violence\u00a0in Cite Soleil, including the recent killing of a 17-year-old girl, when they were attacked on Sunday, according to a statement from Haiti\u2019s Association of Independent Journalists.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe journalists were just doing their job,\u201d the group said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t commit any crime.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dieudonne St-Cyr, a reporter with the association, told radio station Metropole Haiti that seven journalists were ambushed by two warring gangs. Five of the reporters were able to escape unharmed.<\/p>\n
The association has called on Haiti\u2019s government to address rising instability, calling the murders \u201cfurther proof of the inability of the state to\u00a0protect lives\u00a0and property, which is nothing other than a violation of human rights\u201d.<\/p>\n
It also described the killings as a \u201cvillainous and odious act\u201d.<\/p>\n
Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he was \u201cdeeply shocked\u201d by the deadly attack on the reporters. \u201cWe strongly condemn this barbaric act, while sending our heartfelt thoughts to the families of the victims and their colleagues,\u201d he\u00a0wrote\u00a0on Twitter on Monday night.<\/p>\n
