European Parliament members have\u00a0overwhelmingly backed a resolution\u00a0that condemns China\u2019s military aggression against Taiwan and said that Beijing\u2019s \u201cprovocative actions\u201d must have consequences on relations with the European Union.<\/p>\n

Stating that the European Union and Taiwan are \u201clike-minded partners\u201d that adhere to the values of \u201cfreedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law\u201d, the resolution was adopted on Thursday by 424 members of the parliament with 14 against and 46 abstentions.<\/p>\n

The hard-hitting resolution said that\u00a0between August 4 and 10 China\u00a0had intensified its \u201clong-standing military intimidation against Taiwan\u201d, which included firing 11 ballistic missiles, at least five of which passed over the island.<\/p>\n

China had also implemented an effective blockade of Taiwan\u2019s air and sea space during the drills and conducted a powerful cyberattack against Taiwan\u2019s private sector and state authorities, the resolution states.<\/p>\n

Chinese ballistic missiles\u00a0fired during the exercise had landed in Japan\u2019s exclusive economic zone, the resolution notes, adding that China\u2019s aggressive actions in the wide region had brought it into dispute with several other countries.<\/p>\n

The People\u2019s Republic of China [PRC] \u201chas been behaving aggressively across a vast [area] of the Indo-Pacific and exerting varying degrees of military or economic coercion, which has led to disputes with neighbours such as Japan, India, the Philippines and Australia,\u201d the resolution stated.<\/p>\n

The European Parliament is \u201cconvinced that the PRC\u2019s provocative actions against Taiwan and in the South China Sea must have consequences for EU-China relations and that the possibility of contingency planning must be considered,\u201d the resolution adds.<\/p>\n

Chinese forces staged\u00a0days of air and sea military drills\u00a0in the Taiwan Strait in August after\u00a0visits to the self-governed island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u00a0and a congressional delegation.<\/p>\n

Taiwan has lived for decades under constant threat of an invasion by China, which claims the democratically ruled island as part of its own territory to be seized one day, by force if necessary.<\/p>\n

The Taiwanese government\u2019s representative office to the EU thanked the parliament on Friday for adopting the resolution which, it said, emphasised \u201cstaunch support for peace & stability in the Taiwan Strait and enhanced Taiwan-EU partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n

The European Parliament\u2019s resolution also expressed sympathy and support for Japan and called on democratic countries in the region to stand up to China\u2019s \u201csabre-rattling\u201d against Taiwan, as regional peace and stability were in the interests of everyone.<\/p>\n
