The European Union has called for a war crimes tribunal as Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said new evidence of torture has been found as more bodies are exhumed from a mass burial site in a town re-taken from Russian forces.<\/p>\n
Jan Lipvasky, foreign minister of the Czech Republic which holds the EU\u2019s rotating presidency, said on Saturday that Russia\u2019s attacks \u201cagainst the civilian population are unthinkable and abhorrent\u201d in the 21st century.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must not overlook it. We stand for the punishment of all war criminals,\u201d he wrote in a message on Twitter.\u00a0\u201cI call for the speedy establishment of a special international tribunal that will prosecute the crime of aggression.\u201d<\/p>\n
The appeal follows the discovery by Ukrainian authorities of about 450 graves outside the formerly Russian-occupied city of Izyum, with some of the exhumed bodies showing signs of torture.<\/p>\n
Zelenskyy, in his daily evening address, said \u201cnew evidence of torture was obtained\u201d from the bodies buried there.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore than 10 torture chambers have already been found in various cities and towns liberated in Kharkiv region,\u201d he added, describing the discovery of electrical implements for torture.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what the Nazis did. This is what Ruscists do. And they will be held accountable in the same way \u2013 both on the battlefield and in courtrooms,\u201d he said, using the term \u201cRuscists\u201d for \u201cRussian fascists\u201d.<\/p>\n
Al Jazeera\u2019s Hoda Abdel-Hamid, reporting from Kharkiv, said the situation in Izyum looks \u201cgruesome on many levels\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIzyum is now a desolate city, completely destroyed. There\u2019s barely a building that hasn\u2019t been at least partially damaged, and I\u2019m talking about civilian targets here \u2013 apartment blocks, schools, pharmacies, the church \u2013 a very desolate picture,\u201d Abdel-Hamid said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a place where you see the real toll of this war. It\u2019s a city that has been besieged, that has been bitterly fought between the two sides. It\u2019s now firmly under Ukrainian control. You see the soldiers roaming the streets, but there\u2019s barely any sign of life.\u201d<\/p>\n
