The captain was previously head of special forces unit \u201cCobra\u201d in the northern region of Kaya.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe have decided to take our responsibilities, driven by a single ideal: the restoration of security and integrity of our territory,\u201d announced soldiers on state television and radio.<\/p>\n<p>It is the second takeover in eight months for the West African state. Damiba took power in a coup in January that\u00a0overthrew former President Roch Kabore, also due in part to frustration over the worsening insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>Burkina Faso has been\u00a0struggling\u00a0to contain rebel groups, including some associated with al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS).<\/p>\n<p>Reporting from Dakar, Senegal, Al Jazeera correspondent Nicolas Haque said with\u00a040 percent\u00a0of Burkina Faso out of the control of the state, there is growing frustration over security in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Haque said the leaders of the last coup also had promised to deal with the armed groups. \u201cThere\u2019s a feeling \u2013 when I speak to people who are on the streets of Ouagadougou \u2013 of deja vu,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) strongly condemned the coup on Friday, saying that it came at an \u201cinopportune\u201d time when progress was being made towards a return to constitutional order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cECOWAS reaffirms its unequivocal opposition to any seizure or maintenance of power by unconstitutional means,\u201d the regional bloc said in a\u00a0statement\u00a0shared on social media.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Heavy gunfire, soldiers on the streets in Burkina Faso capital\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5i17l0YqM2w\" width=\"770\" height=\"434\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Burkina Faso military leader Paul-Henri Damiba has been deposed in the country\u2019s second coup in a year, as army Captain Ibrahim Traore took charge, dissolving the transitional government and suspending the constitution.
