Russia has accused Ukraine of planning to detonate a radioactive dirty bomb and blame it on Moscow.<\/p>\n
Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed the \u201crapidly deteriorating situation\u201d in the Ukraine war in calls with NATO nations on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Without providing evidence, Shoigu said Ukraine could escalate the conflict with a dirty bomb \u2014 a device that uses explosives to scatter radioactive waste. It does not have the devastating effect of a nuclear explosion, but it could expose broad areas to radioactive contamination.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe purpose of the provocation is to accuse Russia of using weapons of mass destruction in the Ukrainian theatre of operations and thereby launch a powerful anti-Russian campaign in the world aimed at undermining confidence in Moscow,\u201d the RIA Novosti news agency\u00a0said on Telegram.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe calculation of the organisers of the provocation is that if it is successfully implemented, most countries will react extremely harshly to the \u2018nuclear incident\u2019 in Ukraine,\u201d the post said. \u201cAs a result, Moscow will lose the support of many of its key partners.\u201d<\/p>\n
Russia provided no evidence to substantiate its allegation.<\/p>\n
Officials in Kyiv immediately hit back.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf anyone can use nuclear weapons in this part of Europe \u2014 it can be only one source \u2014 and that source is the one that has ordered comrade Shoigu to telephone here or there,\u201d Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly video message.<\/p>\n
Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said \u201cRussian lies\u201d about a dirty bomb \u201care as absurd as they are dangerous\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cFirstly, Ukraine is a committed NPT [nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty] member: We neither have any \u2018dirty bombs\u2019 nor plan to acquire any,\u201d he said. \u201cSecondly, Russians often accuse others of what they plan themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
