An alleged serial rapist punched a 71-year-old churchgoer in the face then abducted her after she finished shopping, before forcing her to perform a sex act on him, the Old Bailey heard.

Joseph McCann, 34, allegedly attacked the pensioner as she got into her black Fiat Punto in the Morrisons car park in Bury, Lancashire on May 5.

She had been attended a service at her local church before making her way to the supermarket to buy toiletries and make-up.

McCann struck the married woman, then demanded sex during a five-hour ordeal, jurors heard.

He forced the pensioner to perform a sex act upon him after parking in an industrial estate off a slip road, it was said.

McCann told her he had a knife and had recently killed someone as he smoked cigarettes and drank wine, the court heard.

Finally, at 6pm, she escaped his clutches at a service station in Knutsford, Cheshire.

When she told her husband of the attack he told her: ‘I will find him, and I will kill him’.

She told officers in an interview played to jurors: ‘At 10am I left my house and got in my car and drove up to church for a service which finished just after 12pm.

‘Then I drove down to my supermarket in Ramsbottom and did my little shop. I came out, I pushed my trolley up and put my stuff in the boot of the car and put the trolley back.

‘Getting back into my car about to drive home, a man approached at the side of the car and got in. I shouted: ‘Get out! Get out!’ That is when he punched me across the face.

‘He said: ‘I need a lift to the motorway,’ He said: ‘I do not want to hurt you; I have got a knife. I just killed someone’.

‘He said: ‘Will you go to get me a cigarette I haven’t got any money,’ so I got him £20 out of my purse.’

McCann forced the woman to stay with him, prosecutors claim, until they pulled up to a carpark near an industrial estate.

The 71-year-old said: ‘We got into this carpark and that is when he said: ‘So, we will have sex now,’ or words to that effect and I said no’.

McCann had found her Apple mobile phone in her handbag and threw it out so she could not call for help, the court heard.

McCann denies 37 charges including the rape of a child under 13, kidnap, and sexual assault concerning 11 alleged victims.

The complainants are aged between 11 and 71, and the offences are said to have occurred across five police force areas over a two-week period between 20 April and 5 May.

McCann, of Aylesbury, Bucks, denies seven counts of rape, one count of rape of a child under 13, seven counts of kidnap, one attempted kidnap, 10 counts of false imprisonment, three counts of assault by penetration, three counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, one count of sexual assault and two of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without their consent.

The trial continues on Tuesday.
