Banks had previously fielded questions if it was too soon to reboot the franchise after the 2011 ABC TV flop that starred Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh and Rachael Taylor; and the film series starring Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz that included 2000’s Charlie’s Angels and the 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.<\/p>\n

‘You\u2019ve had 37 Spider-Man movies and you\u2019re not complaining!’ she told the Wall Street Journal<\/a> last week. ‘I think women are allowed to have one or two action franchises every 17 years – I feel totally fine with that.’ <\/p>\n

The film, which is believed to have a production budget around $50 million, according to Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, fell short of its projected $12-15 million domestic debut. <\/p>\n

Charlie’s Angels came in third behind Ford v Ferrari with $31 million and Midway with $8.8 million at the domestic box office. It did pull in another $19.3 million in international box office, totalling around $28 million. <\/p>\n

Banks spoke about how gender dynamics related to the film’s potential performance in an interview with the Herald Sun<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n

‘Look, people have to buy tickets to this movie, too,’ she said. ‘This movie has to make money. If this movie doesn’t make money it reinforces a stereotype in Hollywood that men don’t go see women do action movies.’<\/p>\n

In regards to female superhero films, Banks added, ‘They’ll go and see a comic book movie with Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel because that’s a male genre.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, director Elizabeth said she worked hard to honour the legacy of Charlie’s Angels in the film’s new reboot. <\/p>\n

‘I think it was revolutionary back then to even say women could solve crimes. The TV show called out sexism in the opening credits,’ Banks told Psychologies magazine.<\/p>\n

‘These women went to the police academy, but they didn’t get good enough jobs – and we took that to heart. <\/p>\n
