The pilot of a flight from Israel which last night prompted the RAF to go supersonic over southern England has spoken of his shock at seeing two fighter jets on his wing.<\/p>\n

The Typhoons were scrambled from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire in the early hours of Sunday, causing panic from London to Brighton as a sonic boom thundered in the skies.<\/p>\n

The unresponsive Boeing 767 was being flown from Tel Aiv to New Hampshire, USA, by Jet Test, an aircraft ferrying company which moves planes from seller to buyer.<\/p>\n

Jet Test pilot, Steven Giordano, told the BBC<\/a>: ‘I looked left and about had a heart attack when I saw one – so close – strobes on and with blueish “glow strips” along the side of his fuselage.<\/p>\n

‘We flashed our landing lights to acknowledge and established radio contact on “guard”… with the fighters. We were already talking to London control at that point. They remained with us for about five minutes.’ <\/p>\n

Giordano, a former airline pilot and US Marine Corps Reservist, said it had taken them around 10 minutes to realise there was an issue with the radio which started somewhere over Germany.<\/p>\n

It then took another ten minutes for them to resolve the problem.<\/p>\n

Giordano, from New Jersey, praised the speed with which the RAF scrambled to his plane’s location, telling the BBC: ‘I applaud them for that.’ <\/p>\n

The bang was heard at about 4.20am, rocking homes, setting off car alarms and sparking panic.<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan Police reassured people when it revealed the bang was caused by RAF planes which were scrambled to intercept an aeroplane flying over the city that lost communications with air traffic control. <\/p>\n

‘The loud bang heard throughout north London and surrounding areas was the result of a sonic boom from RAF planes,’ it tweeted. ‘There is no cause for concern.’<\/p>\n

An RAF spokesman said: ‘Typhoon aircraft from RAF Coningsby were scrambled this morning, as part of the UK’s Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) procedures, after an aircraft lost communications in UK airspace. <\/p>\n

‘The aircraft was intercepted and its communications were subsequently re-established.<\/p>\n

‘The Typhoons are returning to their base.’ <\/p>\n

According to technologist Alp Toker, a Boeing 767-300 from Tel Aviv lost contact with air traffic control at 3.50am, and 10 minutes later at 4am, RAF Coningsby scrambled Typhoons to meet it.<\/p>\n

The sonic boom was heard at 4.18am, and at 4.20am the plane safely passed central London and continued its journey. <\/p>\n

‘I live in hertfordshire and was on phone to someone in central london,’ Mike wrote. ‘I heard explosion 10-15 seconds before they did.’<\/p>\n

Another, Nick Cowan added: ‘Anyone in NW London know what that noise was? Sounded like an explosion and it shook the house? Heart pounding. Not good.’ <\/p>\n

And J.Ward wrote: ‘Just heard explosion in Hertfordshire. Reports that it’s been heard in London too. Mad. Windows shook. Thought plane had exploded above or something.’<\/p>\n

‘There are no reports of an explosion and police are looking into the incident. There is no cause for public concern.’ <\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, two RAF Typhoon fighter jets caused sonic booms over the east of England.<\/p>\n

The Typhoons’ Quick Reaction Alert caused sonic booms across the east coast as they raced south from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.<\/p>\n

Police across Essex received numerous 999 calls reporting an explosion, but the noise was believed to be the two RAF jets breaking the sound barrier.<\/p>\n

Depending on the aircraft’s altitude, a sonic boom will be heard at ground level two to 60 seconds after it breaks the speed of sound. <\/p>\n

The distance from which the boom can be heard is approximately one mile per 1,000 feet of altitude. <\/p>\n

Therefore a supersonic aircraft travelling at an altitude of 30,000 feet would cause a lateral boom of about 30 miles.    <\/p>\n

What is a sonic boom? <\/h3>\n
\n

A sonic boom is a thunder-like noise a person on the ground hears when an aircraft or other type of aerospace vehicle flies overhead faster than the speed of sound, or ‘supersonic.’<\/p>\n

Air reacts like fluid to supersonic objects. As those objects travel through the air, molecules are pushed aside with great force and this forms a shock wave, much like a boat creates a wake in water. The bigger and heavier the aircraft, the more air it displaces.  <\/p>\n

The shock wave forms a ‘cone’ of pressurized or built-up air molecules, which move outward and rearward in all directions and extend all the way to the ground. <\/p>\n

As this cone spreads across the landscape along the flight path, it creates a continu\u00adous sonic boom along the full width of the cone’s base. The sharp release of pressure, after the buildup by the shock wave, is heard as the sonic boom.<\/p>\n

The change in air pressure associated with a sonic boom is only a few pounds per square foot – about the same pressure change experienced riding an elevator down two or three floors. <\/p>\n

It is the rate of change, the sudden changing of the pressure, which makes the sonic boom audible. <\/p>\n
