Prince Harry has finally addressed longstanding rumours that Major James Hewitt is his real father.<\/p>\n

It is just one of many explosive subjects the Duke of Sussex writes about in his new memoir \u2018Spare\u2019.<\/p>\n

The royals have never openly discussed the theory about Harry\u2019s parentage, which developed after it was revealed Diana had a five year affair with Hewitt in the 1980s.
\n“…. the rumour going around at the time that my real father was one of my mother\u2019s ex-lovers: Major James Hewitt\u201d, Prince Harry writes in the leaked book. “One cause of the rumour was Major Hewitt\u2019s red hair, but another was sadism.<\/p>\n

“Tabloid readers loved the idea that Prince Charles\u2019s youngest son was not Prince Charles\u2019s son. They never got tired of that \u2018joke\u2019, for some reason.”
\nThe Duke of Sussex wonders whether this rumour was used to paint him as a \u201claughing stock\u201d, noting that it didn\u2019t seem to matter that his mother hadn\u2019t met Major Hewitt \u201cuntil long after I was born.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the course of Harry\u2019s life, the rumours have been rehashed in various forms \u201cwith some seriousness\u201d, he notes.<\/p>\n

Harry claims that sections of the media went as far as \u201chunting my DNA to verify it\u201d, remarking that he believed after \u201ctorturing\u201d Princess Diana into hiding that \u201csoon they would come for me.\u201d
\nRetired British Army captain Hewitt penned two books about his affair with Diana during her marriage to Prince Charles, further attempting to sell the love letters he exchanged with the princess.<\/p>\n

The pair met at a party in 1986, and Hewitt went on to help Diana overcome her fear of horse riding as her instructor.<\/p>\n

The former Major has addressed the rumours surrounding Harry\u2019s paternity himself, remarking in a 2002 interview with The Sunday Mirror that \u201cthere really is no possibility whatsoever that I am Harry\u2019s father\u2026Harry was already walking by the time my relationship with Diana began.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Spare, the Duke of Sussex recalls one occasion Prince Charles once jokingly questioned whether he was Harry\u2019s father.<\/p>\n
