The clip was an ‘Easter Egg’ for fans planted on BBC iPlayer, airing around 40 seconds before the end of series three.

It begins with Uncle Bryn in a hot and steamy kitchen as he juggles saucepans and  checks on a turkey in the oven, to the sound of Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day.

Using a walkie-talkie he shouts: ‘Gwen, Jason anyone! The table should have been set 37 minutes ago and the plates are still at Stacey’s.’

He lifts a piping hot saucepan lid and screams  ‘Ahhh! Oh!’ before plates are heard smashing – with Stacey clad in a Father Christmas hat rushing into the room.

Fans of the hit comedy series set in Wales and Essex are eagerly anticipating a Christmas Day special after the last episode aired ten years ago.

Gavin and Stacey is written by and co-stars Ruth and James. The festive special sees Uncle Bryn, played by Rob, cooking a very big Christmas dinner in Barry for the extended family.

James and Ruth recently admitted the first draft of the ‘Gavin & Stacey’ Christmas special wasn’t ‘good enough’.

The talented pair feared they were being ‘naive’ about plans for a one-off revival when they were struggling with the script almost a decade after the show came to an end.

Jamestold Radio Times magazine: ‘We’d confused ourselves in thinking there needed to be an absolute narrative arc – there was so much in the story, there was no room for the characters to breathe.

‘We’d written about 40 pages, and we sat and we read it … and we both went, ‘This just isn’t good enough. It doesn’t feel like the show. It doesn’t feel like it’s right.’

‘There was a real silence in this room … a sense of, ‘Maybe we were too naive to think we could pick it up.”

Ruth says the duo stepped away from writing for a day and later chatted about the issues as they dined with their partners David Peet and Julia Carey.

She said: ‘We did then identify what it was. There needed to be a heart to it, a big moment that resonated.’

Speaking to BBC Wales last month, Ruth revealed that the episode had wrapped and is ready to hit screens on Christmas Day this year.

Ruth, who plays Nessa Jenkins in the hit BBC series, explained: ‘It’s all done and dusted, kippers and custard! It’s in the can, as they say.

‘It was really good fun, it was a very smooth shoot. It was gorgeous to see everybody again.’

The actress added that she was overwhelmed by the reaction the cast received when they returned to Barry in Wales to shoot scenes for the one-hour festive episode.

She said: ‘Being in Barry was insane, we had the best welcome ever. It was quite handy because I just went in character and just talked to everybody like Nessa, which was great because I could just be rude.

‘I’d just go, ‘Oh, love, what you doing here? Back off!’ I loved that because you could just hide behind rudeness.’

Although details of the storyline for the special are being kept under wraps, Larry – who plays Gavin’s dad Mick Shipman in the show – has promised fans they will get ‘everything they want’ from the reunion.

The reunion was confirmed in May, and sparked euphoria among die-hard fans who couldn’t wait to hear the latest on the titular couple.

Gavin and Stacey was broadcast on BBC Three, BBC Two and BBC One from May 2007 until January 2010 for three series.

Teasing details about the upcoming reboot episode, screen star James, 40, recently revealed the lengths he went to in order to write the script, despite his busy schedule.

Due to the fact that he lives in LA and Ruth lives in the UK, James explained: ‘We wrote the new script over Facetime.

‘I would get up at 4am, and work with Ruth until it was time to take Max to school…’

The writing powerhouse were keen to keep their decision to themselves as they didn’t want to feel pressure to make something that might not work.

He told GQ: ‘We didn’t tell anyone we were doing it, certainly not the BBC. We thought, ‘We’ll do it for us and we’ll know if it’s right’. We’ve seen too many people ruin what they’ve done – for no reason.’

Recently released odds from Ladbrokes are picking Gavin and Stacey to be the most watched show on Christmas Day.

After the teaser for the show was released on Tuesday morning the bookies have responded by pricing it at just a 1/3 shot to be the most watched show on December 25th.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: ‘Fans can’t wait to see what Gavin and Stacey have been up to and it looks as though the Christmas special will easily smash viewing figures and surpass everything else on December 25th.’

The one-hour episode will air on Christmas Day 2019 on BBC One.
