Man set on fire after coming into contact with overhead cables at Birmingham New Street Station

A man was rushed to hospital after he was ‘set on fire’ by overhead cables at a Birmingham train station. 

Police and paramedics rushed to Birmingham New Street Station at around 8am today to reports of a man injured.

One onlooker said the man was ‘on fire’ after coming into contact with overhead wires. 

He is being treated for life-threatening burn injuries.

Police and paramedics rushed to Birmingham New Street Station at around 8am today after a man came into contact with overhead wires and suffered life threatening burns. An air ambulance is pictured landing at a nearby car park 

Platforms have re-opened but cancellations and delays are expected to last throughout this morning.  

A British Transport Police spokesman told the BBC: ‘Paramedics and police quickly arrived on scene, and a man was treated for burn injuries. 

‘At this early stage it is believed he came into contact with the overhead power lines.

‘He has been taken to hospital where his condition is described as life threatening.

‘The circumstances of the man receiving his injuries are at this time, not believed to be suspicious. ‘
